From Mick Burns - The Chainsaw Sculptor

What's happening?

These carving events over recent years have turned out to be particularly interesting.

First of all: "Sculpture at The Festival of Wood" formerly "Sculptree" with once again a very high standard of work produced by the team of twelve monumental wood whittlers.

Top price recieved was for Peter Bowsher's Pelicans £4700.

Dan Cordell's Apple Core was the surprise at £1050. This was carved up in a day, after he'd finished his main subject.

Carrbridge Festival

Carrbridge is in the Scottish Highlands just north of Aviemore. This is the festival where they have The World Porridge Making Championship. It now incorporates The Landmark Log Sculpture Championship.

The competitors have four hours to create their sculpture from a log (8ft long by approx 15" mid dia) using only a chainsaw.

Competitors were:

Peter Bowsher

Mick Burns

Graham Jones

Kevin Gilders

Ronnie McDonald

Ian Chalmers

Mark Bishop

Andrew Chadwick

Charlie Bowsher

Unfortunately Charlie and Andrew were unable to finish their sculptures on time so I haven't included pictures of them.

Peter Bowsher came first (ratbag), Kevin Gilders second, and Mick Burns (me) third

The people of Carrbridge treated the carvers very well indeed. We were put up in excellent accommodation and invited to a village Ceilidh the night before the event. We then had a party the evening after the event.

A special thanks to Tom Jones for all of his organisation and hospitality. A thank you also to Mary my landlady.

Sandringham English Open Chainsaw Competition

A wonderful event. The organisation was excellent. All of the Sculptors had a wonderful time. Our overseas competitors seemed particularly impressed.

I'm still trying to get a list of names of those who had taken part, so unfortunately there will be a few pictures without names.

First place Bob King

Second place Brian Ruth

Third Place Simon O'Rourke

Many thanks to Mark and Dennis for all the masses of effort they put into the organisation.

Very many thanks to "ECHO" for supplying saws and safety gear for the overseas carvers. Their little rear handled 2700ES looks like a big winner for those looking for a very lightweight, well balanced carving saw. They sell it with an Echo 10" Quarter tip carving bar.
