COURSE
OBJECTIVES
To introduce the trainee to the safe and efficient use of the chainsaw in
the process of large scale woodcarving.
To be able to execute a simple carving project of their own choosing using
a standard chainsaw, a carving chainsaw, alternative power tools, or a combination
of tools. |

TOPICS COVERED
Safety Introduction; Types of cuts and associated dangers (plus demonstration);
Planning a project; Tools and equipment (chainsaws plus other tools and
accessories); Wood (types, sources, properties, drying defects); Care
of carvings and finishes; Actual hands on carving.
COURSE DETAILS
The course lasts two days, this can be arranged over a weekend if enough
prospective trainees require it. The number of places available will be
a maximum of 8 on one course. Carving demonstration will be by Mick Burns.
Instruction will be by Mick Burns aided by assistant Andy Reynolds. Timber,
fuel and oil will be supplied. Trainees are encouraged to bring their
own equipment and safety wear. A limited range of safety wear is available
for trainees who may be missing some items (by prior arrangement when
booking course). There is also a range of saws available as replacements
for trainees broken down saws, or saws deemed to be unsafe to use. Other
tools are available for the trainee to experiment with, including some
chainsaws equipped with carving bars.
All carvings created can be taken away by the the trainees.
Trainees must bring as a minimum, Warm outdoor clothing, wet weather clothing,
steel toe-capped boots.
Places on this course are only available to those holding a recognised
qualification in the use of chainsaws. Trainees will have to show either
a certificate of competence in the use of chainsaws issued by NPTC
or a certificate issued by Lantra.
Total cost of course is £285.00 + VAT. On booking, a payment
of £100.00 will be required, the balance payable immediately
on commencing the course.
Course dates will be set according to the requirements of the clients.
The date will be arranged to best suit a minimum of six clients on any
one course.
The course organisers reserve the right to deny access to a chainsaw (or
other tool) to any trainee they consider to be a danger to themselves
or others on the course.
Accommodation and its cost is the responsibility of the trainee, however
the organisers can help in making arrangements.
